The Inkosi Super Cup announcement

Johannesburg, South Africa – NODWIN Gaming South Africa has announced the postponement of the Umzansi Esports League, which was initially set to open for registrations on 22 March 2020. This announcement comes as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic currently sweeping the globe to protect the health and safety of the organizers and players.

It has also been announced that NODWIN Gaming South Africa will instead be launching a new interim tournament, titled the Inkosi Super Cup. The tournament is set to kick-off on 30 March 2020 and will comprise the same four esports titles as the Umzansi Esports League, namely:

  • CS:GO
  • FIFA 20
  • PUBG Mobile
  • Tekken 7

It is anticipated that this new tournament will allow more South Africans to engage with esports, particularly those now bound to their homes. Registrations for the Inkosi Super Cup will open on 23 March 2020.

The Inkosi Super Cup details

The Inkosi Super Cup will run over a period of 3 months and will be in a short-form, cup-system format. Each esports title will host four weekly cups per month, each on a different day of the week. All cups will use a single-elimination format and the fourth cup in every month will be the finals. Entrance to the Inkosi Super Cup will be free of charge.

It is noted that there will be ample opportunity for players to compete and win over the 3-month period. Each esports title will have weekly and monthly cup winners. There will also be overall tournament winners for those placing first on the leaderboard in their respective esports titles. These winners will be awarded prizes and will be honoured with the Umzansi Grand Slam title.

Teams per monthly cup that will qualify for the Umzansi Esports League will be as follows:

  • CS:GO – Two teams
  • FIFA – Two players
  • Tekken 7 – Two players
  • PUBG Mobile – Eight teams

A last chance qualifier will be available after the three monthly cups which will also allow the following amount of teams to qualify directly for the Umzansi Esports League:

  • CS:GO – Two teams
  • FIFA – Two players
  • Tekken 7 – Two players
  • PUBG Mobile – Eight teams

All teams and players, including the weekly cup winners, will be permitted to re-register for subsequent cups and may compete for the entire 3-month period. A team that has already won a monthly cup will still be allowed to compete in weekly cups. However, these teams will not receive any further weekly reward, with the exception of additional winnings in their overall Grand Slam placement. A Discord server will be used for all organisation and promotion of games and broadcasts.

The Inkosi Super Cup will be broadcasting one full esports cup title per week, weekly highlights, and one monthly cup final on GINX Esports TV Africa (DSTV channel 127). There will also be weekly streams of selected titles on YouTube, giving everyone the chance to watch the action unfold.
