eLaLiga Santander African Regional Final features four South African players

In October 2020, we reported on the eLaLiga Santander Fan Cup. Organized by LaLiga and Electronic Arts, the Fan Cup is an expansion of the official tournament of FIFA21 in Spain. In November 2020, South African FIFA21 players competed in two local qualifiers to find the players who will compete in the African Regional Final.

Globally, more than 21,000 entrants from 16 countries participated in a total of 31 online tournaments. 40 players emerged and will now go head to head in their respective regional finals. A total of four South African FIFA21 players have qualified for the eLaLiga Santander African Regional Final.

The South Africans will now compete in the African Regional Final later this month. There, they will fight for a spot in the eLaLiga Santander Fan Cup Grand Finals.

The South African players are:
  • Kaylan Moodley (2 x FGS Africa Cup Champion)
  • Zaakir Abdulla
  • Mogamad Zuhayr Abrahams (Orlando Pirates eSports Player)
  • Masoom Fakie (Bravado Gaming FIFA Player)

The African Regional Final will also feature players from Egypt. The action is scheduled to take place online on 20 to 21 February 2021. We wish the players all the best of luck. We hope to see a local player represent South Africa at the eLaLiga Santander Fan Cup Grand Finals.

A press release explains:

“The final will be held in conjunction with the Grand Final of the Spanish professional competition, eLaLiga Santander, which will take place on the same weekend at the same venue. As a result, the players of eLaLiga Santander, conceived for professional players from Spain, and the players of the first edition of the eLaLiga Santander Fan Cup, designed to be an introduction to the competitive world, will rub shoulders in the thick of this spectacle organised by LaLiga and Electronic Arts.”

This is, of course, an amazing opportunity for the South African FIFA21 players. The Grand Final will take place on 8 May in Madrid, and will feature eight players from the various regional finals. There’s also a prize pool of €10,000 up for grabs. At the current Euro to Rand exchange rate, that’s over R170,000.

You can catch the FIFA21 esports action on the official eLaLiga Twitch.tv channel.
