South African team places 4th at CEC 2022

Last week, we reported that a South African team playing under the Global Esports Federation’s “Team World Connected” banner would compete at the Rocket League event at Commonwealth Esports Championship (CEC) 2022, which took place over the weekend in Birmingham, England.

Commonwealth Esports Championship 2022 results

The team from South Africa was placed in Group A with Australia, Jamaica and Kenya. They got off to a great start beating Kenya 3-0, then lost to Australia 0-3. For a spot in the playoffs, the team from South Africa beat Jamaica 3-0, securing a top-four finish.

During the playoffs, Team World Connected was demolished by Wales with a clean 3-0. In the 3rd/4th place playoffs match, Australia proved too strong with the team from South Africa, as they ended up finishing fourth at the Commonwealth Esports Championship 2022. Wales beat England in the grand final of the Commonwealth Esports Championship 2022 to become the champions.

Final CEC 2022 standings:
  • 1st place – Wales
  • 2nd place – England
  • 3rd place – Australia
  • 4th place – Team World Connected
  • 5th & 6th place – Jamaica and Canada
  • 7th & 8th place – Kenya and India

The team is ATK Esports’ Rocket League squad, consisting of the following South African players.

  • Umer “Arceon” Majiet

A big thanks to everyone involved that made this happen. It was awesome to see a team of South African players compete on the world stage and place fourth overall. Well done!
