2019 Vodacom rAge Expo Recap
The Vodacom rAge Expo 2019 took place between the 27th and 29th of September this year. The event saw 69 solid hours of LAN gaming, four days of setup, the three day event, and an entire day to break down. In addition, 30,000 cold drinks and 1,635 kilograms of chips were consumed. Fans from all over South Africa typically attend the event to dress up, shop, play, and take in the fantastic sights. The 17,483 sqm Ticketpro Dome transported attends to an eclectic galaxy of geek over the weekend, with a reported 35,615 people attending the event this year. That’s an increase on the reported 2018 numbers, despite Comic Con Africa happening only a week before.
On the Floor
Vodacom rAge also featured a bunch of events, from robotics and other cutting-edge tech to action-packed esports tournaments. Our own Matthew Stott covered the ASUS ROG Invitational results in some depth. Goliath Gaming won the lion’s share of the R150,000 prize pool after defeating Sinister5 in the finals! There was also the annual Artists’ Alley, showcasing South African creative talent, including Steampunk and cosplay fashion designer Sin-Bin, local author Chantelle Roberts, and one of SA’s international comic art sensations, Warren Louw. In addition, various pickup-style tournaments and charity events could be found on the expo floor.
The World Robotic Olympiad (WRO) also featured at rAge Expo for the first time. It brought some of the smartest young minds in the country to show off their problem-solving skills. Locally, five provincial events took place. The top-nine national qualifying teams who won across the different categories will head off to compete at the WRO International in Hungary.
