Do you love playing and competing in some Rocket League esports? Well, then, the Rocket League Championship Series (RLCS) for Sub-Saharan Africa is just what you need. Teams can sign up for the RLCS 2022/23 SSA Winter Open right now via Open Qualifiers. Here’s what you need to know.
RLCS 22/23 SSA Winter Open Qualifiers
The RLCS 22/23 SSA Winter Open event runs from 21 to 29 January 2023, and it starts with the Open Qualifiers. You can enter these Open Qualifiers with your team by heading to the official Start.gg page for the event. Registration is completely free.
The Open Qualifier takes place on 21 January 2023, with the top eight teams making it to the Closed Qualifier (22 January) to compete against others who’ve already made it through via RLCS Points ranking. The top eight teams from the Closed Qualifier will make their way into the Main Event (27 to 29 January) of the Winter Open, where $20,000 (roughly R340,000) will be on the line, alongside some precious RLCS Points. Check out the complete tournament format below.
Open Qualifier – Day 1 (Double Elimination):
- Teams losing a match in the Upper Bracket drop to the Lower Bracket
- Losing a match in the Lower Bracket eliminates a team
- 8 teams advance to Day 2
Closed Qualifier – Day 2 (Swiss System):
- Best-of-Five
- 16 teams (8 teams ranked 9th-16th in RLCS points & 8 teams from Day 1 Double Elimination Bracket)
- Teams winning 3 matches qualify to the Main Event
- Teams losing 3 matches are eliminated
Main Event – Day 1 (Group Stage; Single Elimination Round 1):
- Best-of-Five
- 16 teams (1st-8th in RLCS points, 8 from Open Qualifier Day 3)
- 4 groups of 4 teams, each team plays every other team in their group (‘Round Robin’)
- Final standings follow Tiebreakers as outlined in the rulebook (2.3.4.4.1), with no additional matches played
- 1st in each group advances to Bracket Quarter-Finals (Day 2)
- 2nd-3rd in each group advance to Bracket Round 1 (Day 1)
- 4th in each group is eliminated
- Bracket Round 1 (Best-of-Five) played in Day 1, with the remainder of the Bracket played in Days 2-3
- Teams losing in Bracket Round 1 are eliminated
Main Event – Day 2 (Single Elimination):
- Bracket Quarter-Finals (Best-of-Seven)
- Teams losing a match are eliminated
- Semi-Finals and Grand Finals played in Day 3
Main Event – Day 3 (Single Elimination):
- Bracket Semi-Finals and Grand Finals (Best-of-Seven)
- Teams losing a match are eliminated
- The final team remaining is the tournament winner
