After 23 years in operation, Complexity Gaming winds down as Jason Lake departs
If I was to ask you about long-time esports organizations, and to name a top 10, most gamers will probably have Complexity Gaming somewhere in their answer.
Complexity Gaming is (was) one of the most storied organizations in history, having been around for well over two decades. To be exact, it’s been 23 years of Complexity Gaming, and now, an official announcement has confirmed that the organization is shutting down.
According to former Complexity Gaming CEO and owner, Jason Lake, the decision to wind down operations was made at the end of 2025. Taking to Twitter (X), Jason Lake explained:
“We surveyed the landscape, surveyed where the business was at, and prospects for raising capital to pay off the seller-held note, and decided the best thing to do was to shut it down in an orderly and professional way, rather than crashing it into the sun as sometimes we see with other organizations. So, for the first time in 23 years, myself and my core team of coworkers are no longer a part of Complexity. Which… feels weird to say, but that is where we’re at, and I wanted to kind of make it official and wrap this thing up and tie it in a bow.“
The ownership has now reverted to GameSquare. While the brand is still there, the departure of Jason Lake marks the end of Complexity Gaming as we know it. Is there a chance for the iconic esports organization to return?
Check out the video below, where Jason Lake announces the news and speaks about what’s next for him.
It goes without saying that Complexity Gaming shutting down is a huge blow for the esports industry. We’ll miss you, Complexity!
