Valve makes massive change to reloading in CS2

Just as BLAST Open Rotterdam 2026’s Group Stage kicked off, developer Valve made a massive change to how reloading works in Counter-Strike 2 (CS2). So much so that the tournament organizer decided to keep Rotterdam on the old patch. Here’s what you need to know.

CS2 reloading change explained

In a huge recent CS2 update entitled “Guns, Guides, and Games,” Valve made one of the biggest gameplay changes in recent memory.

In case you need a bit of a refresher, when a player reloads in CS2, the leftover ammo in their magazine is sent back into the reserve supply. Therefore, you’ll often see people reload willy-nilly, topping off their ammo count by reloading even after firing just a few bullets. That made the decision to reload incredibly easy.

Well, with the latest CS2 update, reloading now has higher stakes. When you reload now, you’ll drop the magazine, and all of its remaining ammo will be gone for good! Yes, that’s insanely huge, a gameplay change akin to that of responsive smokes when CS2 first launched.

In the blog post announcing the update, Valve explained that:

Now, when you reload, you’ll drop the used magazine and discard all of its remaining ammo. Instead of ‘topping off’ your weapon with a few bullets, a new full magazine will be taken from the reserves whenever you reload. How many reserve mags will each weapon have? Most have gotten a three clips fill-up, but some weapons will have less to reward efficiency and precision, or more to encourage spamming through walls and smokes. Keep an eye on your reserve supply!

The other two significant changes in the update are that map guides are now available in Competitive game mode and matchmaking. Further, you can now join your friends in Custom Games directly from the Friends List. Nice one, Valve!
